The Swan Pub and Restaurant

The Swan - Now

LOCATION

The Swan is a character village inn specialising in fine cuisine, fine wines and real ales. It has a restaurant, lounge bar and "Snug" (available for meetings - no charge - just drink the beer).

There is also a patio and a beautiful large lawned garden. The restaurant is non-smoking and there is unlimited parking.

Come and watch the cricket on Thursday evenings, and Saturday & Sunday afternoons throughout the summer - see www.lhcc.org - the pitch is opposite the pub, next to the 9 hole golf course.

The Swan is a family-run pub and is one of the hidden places of England which should be sought out and experienced. There is always a warm welcome from Nigel and his wife, Sam.

The Swan - Then

HISTORY

Built in circa 1520 and 1680 the timber framed building consists of three cottages with five extensions, oak beamed ceilings and pillars, a kitchen range and an Inglenook fireplace.

Research shows that it is the oldest pub in Buckinghamshire and a plaque to that effect was fixed to the front of the building until about 5 years ago, when someone stole it.

The Swan was an ale house (selling only beer) for most of its life and became a pub in the early 20th century. The pub is known for its association with the last requests of condemned prisoners, on their way to the nearby gallows, for "a last & final ale". There are many tales of ghosts, but we have yet to confirm any "happenings".

The "Snug" has been a Jug & Bottle for most of the life of the pub, and in the 30's, 40's & 50's it was a sub post office. Clark Gable, James Stewart and Glen Miller were frequent visitors during WWII, and signed photographs were displayed in the bar for many years. It seems they cycled from Bovingdon airbase!
